Soumak Boutique was established in May 2021, by Rasha & Elvira, two passionate women from the Middle-East. Our story started with a small project during the Syrian crisis where we created a support circle of refugee women who were survivors of gender-based-violence. It was an arduous and yet very inspiring journey, which showed us the incredible potential that artisan women had despite of their struggle. Fast forward to today, we created Soumak Boutique and we are still pursuing the same mission here in Canada.
We source 100% natural textiles and tapestry such as Turkish Towels, Kilim bags/pillows, all of which are handwoven in Turkey by women from various marginalized villages. We also collaborate with different Syrian refugees residing in Canada who make Mosaic Syrian handcrafts and boardgames.
Working with different crafts-persons, weavers, jewellery makers, who have practiced their craft for generations, Soumak Boutique’s goal is not only to support them in their craft but also to be part of a conscious movement to offer the consumer an opportunity to shop consciously and to enjoy a long-lasting product of a special beauty that revives a tremendous history.
